Microblog #78: Tech for housing

Fighting eviction? There’s an app for that.

Eviction rates in Virginia are a big topic in the industry. Most agree that part of the problem is the difficulty renters have navigating the court system and understanding legal rights and responsibilities. For average people, this is not so easy, and free legal services are not always plentiful. (Although the City of Richmond hopes to begin fixing this with a pilot diversion program.)

A new phone app developed for New York City residents is attempting to level the playing field. JustFix.nyc is a free, easy to use application that can help tenants respond to an eviction notice, request repairs from their landlords and, eventually, navigate housing court. As the New York Times reports, technology solutions such as this may truly democratize the housing court legal system.
